Wandering Tattler - Alki Shorebirding
I had seen reports of a Wandering Tattler at Alki Beach, so I made plans to head over there. I arrived at the south end of the beach around 6:30 am, right after sunrise. I climbed over the driftwood onto the beach and made my way to where the Tattler had been reported. As I walked down the beach I saw a pair of Harlequin Ducks, a county first, and a Great Blue Heron.
A little farther down the beach I spotted a mixed flock of shorebirds. There were Killdeer, Western Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plovers, and in the back was the Wandering Tattler. It was easy to pick out because of its bobbing walk. Can you spot the Semipalmated Plover in the above photo?
I only got brief views before it flew away. I decided to keep wandering the beach and hope it would return. As I walked back up the beach I saw a country first Spotted Sandpiper and a Pigeon Guillemot. Then I walked down the street to a nearby cove. As I arrived there was another birder there and the Tattler was on a log in the cove.
It stuck around for a while and I got some great looks and photos. Overall a great day of birding.
I got five county firsts: Wandering Tattler, Western Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, and Harlequin Duck.
